Bullet Cams were found inside 7 modular engines that won their class championships, and set 5 modular world records in the 2008 race reason alone.  You may not have heard of them but you see cars using their cams covering over 50% of the fastest modular lists on the forums.  We worked extensively with Bullet to develop these new proprietary profiles which utilize the latest technology for the modular engines.  They are designed and optimized for the unique airflow characteristics of both stock and ported heads.

Please read the detailed explanations below before choosing a cam.  These are not your typical off the shelf one size fits all cam lobe like the other guys.  The lobes are designed for specific duty be it on the intake or exhaust and/or if the application is naturally aspirated, blower, or turbo.  They have very aggressive install centerlines and asymmetrical lobes which make their specs very different than typical cams you are used to seeing.  Duration is important in determining a cam's suitability but just as important is the installation location (centerline) of the lobes.  This is something that many other modular cams have not done properly, and hence you usually don't see it listed in their specs.

We have found (the hard way) that most all other 2V cams on the market have unacceptable intake valve to piston clearance.  Our 2V cams are designed with a minimum of 0.035" of intake to valve clearance for 4.6 engines with PI heads with stock pistons.  While that sounds small it is a safe spec for this engine.  We found 0.000" - 0.005" when we actually measured the other guys cams, and many cases of bent valves.

All 2V and 4V cam specs are rated with a 1.80 ratio rocker.  The Ford rocker is actually a variable ratio and 1.80 is closer to reality in these lift ranges.  Thus our 0.550" lift spec is a true 0.550" lift in the engine rather than the 0.545" you find from some of the other guys.  These lobe designs are the most aggressive that can be made with the stock Ford rocker system.

NPI 4.6 and 5.4 naturally aspirated cams

NPI heads have different needs than PI heads so we now offer NPI specific cams.  NPI heads have much more piston to valve clearance than a PI engine, this allows more freedom in camshaft design.  They have more restricted exhaust ports so the exhaust duration is made longer to compensate.  The 525 intake lift cams will work on stock NPI heads, the 550 lift version will need raised retainers on the intake valves or other modification to work.  500 exhaust lift is used for Stage 1 and 2 as the stock exhaust port stalls at 400 lift.  Stage 2.5 and higher cams are designed for modified/ported NPI heads with aftermarket intake manifolds.  Please contact us if you have any questions on this. 
 
All NPI NA cams are designed to use the stock NPI valve springs up to 6500RPM, above that upgraded valve springs are highly recommended.

4.6 PI motors with stock pistons has severe intake valve to piston clearance problems.  If using the stock heads only the Torquer, Stage 1, and Stage 2 cams will fit safely.  All larger cams require either modified intake valves and/or piston notches.  The exhaust duration is made shorter on PI head NA cams as the exhaust port be it stock or ported is highly overactive compared to the PI intake port.
 
All NA cams below Stage 3 are designed for use with the stock valve springs up to 6500RPM, above that upgraded springs are required.

Advanced intake lobe version of the Stage 1 cam, will need a modified intake valve to have sufficient piston to valve clearance.  I did a cam with this spec for a friend and really liked the result.  It lost no bottom end and made another 25-30RWHP up to 5500 RPM.  Above 6000RPM the output fell like stone however in comparison to our other cams, but someone wanting a cam of this size is not shifting higher than 6000RPM anyway.  5 speed or 2500 minimum stall torque converter recommended.  Rear gear of 3.73 recommended.

 

46PI STAGE 2       - NATURALLY ASPIRATED

46PI STAGE 2P    - NATURALLY ASPIRATED

Advanced intake lobe version of the Stage 2 cam.  This is the cam to use if you are willing to remove the cylinder head and replace the intake valve as it will give more midrange torque than the Stage 2 with no loss of top end power.  PTV is very tight with the stock valve and this cam, you only have about 0.005" of clearance with the stock valve and piston with this cam.  With the modified intake valve you are safe.  Rear gear of 3.73 minimum recommended.

 

46PI STAGE 2.5    - NATURALLY ASPIRATED

This will need modified intake valves to work with the stock pistons.  In comparison to the Stage 2P cam this would be the cam to choose if you are more concerned with 5000-6500 power and are willing to lose some torque below 4000RPM.  This cam should be used with long tube headers.  Rear gear of 4.10 minimum recommended.  This is the cam that was used in our 300RWHP 2V combo.

 

PI STAGE 3         - NATURALLY ASPIRATED
233/230 550/525 106/110 108

Notched pistons and higher flow fuel injectors are required.   Aftermarket intake, ported heads, and long tube headers are recommended.  Mild to rough idle, good low end torque with matching compression.  Rear gear of 4.30 minimum recommended.  This is the recommended minimum cam size for those building the recession buster 2V combo.

 

46PI STAGE 3R   - NATURALLY ASPIRATED
233/230 550/525 112/110 111

This is a retarded intake centerline version of the Stage 3 NA cam.  Doing this allows this cam duration to be used with a stock piston and modified intake valves with our minimum recommended clearance.  This is the largest NA cam we offer than can be used with a stock piston with the 4.6 PI head.  In comparison to the regular Stage 3 NA this will have reduced midrange torque, however you can fit this one without a piston notch.  Higher flow fuel injectors and long tube headers are recommended.  Mild to rough idle.  Rear gear of 4.10 minimum recommended.

 

PI STAGE 3.5       - NATURALLY ASPIRATED 238/235 550/525 106/110 108

Ported heads, notched pistons, headers, and higher flow fuel injectors are required.  This cam will be best suited with extreme intakes such as the Logan, Edelbrock or TFS.    This is probably the max effort cam possible with the 4R70W transmission before a C4 or similar conversion is warranted.  Expect shift points of 6500-7000RPM with the stock PI intake and 7000-7200RPM with more extreme intakes.  Rough idle.  Rear gear of 4.56 minimum recommended.

 

PI STAGE 4.0       - NATURALLY ASPIRATED 241/238 550/540 106/110 108

Aftermarket intake, ported heads, notched pistons, headers, and higher flow fuel injectors are required.  This cam will be best suited with extreme intakes such as the Logan, Edelbrock or TFS and is designed for shift points 7000-7300RPM.  Rough idle.  Rear gear of 4.56 minimum recommended.

 

PI STAGE 4.5       - NATURALLY ASPIRATED 245/243 550/540 106/110 108

Aftermarket intake, ported heads, notched pistons, headers, and higher flow fuel injectors are required.  This cam will be best suited with extreme intakes such as the Logan, Edelbrock or TFS and is designed for shift points 7200-7500RPM.  Rough to radical idle.  Rear gear of 4.88 minimum recommended.

Aftermarket intake, ported heads, notched pistons, headers, and higher flow fuel injectors are required.  This cam will be best suited with extreme intakes such as the Logan, Edelbrock or TFS and is designed for shift points 7500~7800RPM.  Radical idle.  Rear gear of 4.88 minimum recommended.  Cams bigger than this are race only and need to contact Bullet directly!

 

 


 

 

PI 5.4 naturally aspirated cams

5.4 PI motors have much more freedom with designing a NA cam as the piston to valve clearance is a full 0.1" larger than a stock 4.6 PI motor.  If using the stock style piston you should be able to safely fit any of these cams however with the Stage 4 and larger you need to check piston to valve clearance of the intake valve to ensure you have safe clearance with your particular engine.  The exhaust duration is made shorter on PI head NA cams as the exhaust port be it stock or ported is highly overactive compared to the PI intake port.
 
All NA cams are designed for use with the stock valve springs up to 6500RPM, above that upgraded springs are highly recommended.

NPI and PI blower, turbo, and nitrous cams

Once under heavy boost and/or nitrous the various heads and shortblocks need close to the same cam specification.  The larger big bore, stroker, and 5.4 based engines can use the next size cam bigger than a 4.6 based motor.  If you look closely the exhaust centerline has been advanced considerably to help blowdown the cylinder and release as much heat as possible.
 
Nitrous Only cams are designed specifically for the Edelbrock intake and nitrous use up to about a 250-300 shot, Higher nitrous levels than this usually require more exhaust lobe advance (wider LSA) to blow down the cylinder more at a cost of some NA power.  We can make the LSA wider for no additional cost if desired.  The Edelbrock prefers a very early intake opening point, slightly tighter LSA, has a raised plenum that is not prone to fuel puddle, and allows the use of the popular Holley 4150 sized nitrous plate system when combined with our custom intake elbow.  Hence we made a line of cams specifically for this now popular combination.  The smallest Nitrous Only cam can do 7000RPM NA shift points and nitrous will shift that higher depending on the size of the shot.  This is one place to be more conservative than normal when it comes to cam sizing.
 
Upgraded valve springs are highly recommended with all blower applications that rev over 6000RPM, and all turbo applications that rev over 5000RPM.

Ideal cam for P1SC that want upper HP, NOVI1200, and Vortech S-trim with more than 10lbs of boost.  Recommended nitrous shot 125HP.  Aftermarket springs required.  Modified intake valves required for 4.6 PI use.  This is the largest blower/nitrous cam we offer that can work on a 4.6 PI without a piston notch and will shift the power band higher in RPM over the Stage 2.  For 4.6 use you should probably be on a better intake than the plastic with this cam as the RPM range is getting up there.

Ideal cam for KB 2.6, D1R, F1, and YSI.  Recommended nitrous shot 175+HP.  Aftermarket springs required.  Aftermarket intake manifold recommended.  Piston notches required with a 4.6 PI combination, they are not required with either a NPI or 5.4 combination.  This is the cam usually recommended for a max effort street/strip 5.4 Lightning.

STAGE 1    - TURBO

This cam is designed specifically for 70MM and smaller single turbo systems, and will help with quicker spooling and lower the turbo lag.  It is highly recommended to replace the valve springs with this cam and any turbo system over 6PSI.  This is a good cam to use for a single turbo street car that you want the least amount of lag possible.

 

STAGE 2    - TURBO

This cam is designed specifically for 75MM and smaller single turbo systems, and will help with quicker spooling and lower the turbo lag.  It is highly recommended to replace the valve springs with this cam and any turbo system over 6PSI.  This is the cam that was used in our default 600RWHP combo.

This cam is designed specifically for 65MM - 80MM single turbo and dual smaller turbo systems that want higher HP and will trade some lower end lag.  Modified intake valve required for the 4.6 PI.  Aftermarket valve springs required.

 

STAGE 3    - TURBO

This cam is designed specifically for 75MM and larger single turbo systems, and dual turbo systems.  This is a higher RPM cam and will have more low RPM turbo lag than our Stage 2 and Stage 2.5 TURBO cams.  This cam is intended for use with ported heads, aftermarket intake, and higher RPM builds.

 


 

TFS specific cams

The TFS 2V heads are slightly different with what is needed for a cam grind.  Even though some of the cam specs are the same as the NPI/PI specs these cams are ground specifically for TFS heads.

You can use the stock TFS springs for all Stage 1 and Stage 2 cams, above that higher seat pressure springs are highly recommended.

Good cam for street/strip.  Minimum torque converter of 3500 recommended.  Rear gear of 4.10 minimum recommended.

 

STAGE 3    - NATURALLY ASPIRATED 233/236 550/550 106/112 109

Good cam for street/strip with the strip highly emphasized.  Minimum torque converter of 4000 recommended.  Ed Justin ran the prototype specs of this cam to a mid 11 at 116MPH in a daily driver automatic Mustang.  This is the largest cam recommended for the plastic PI intake.  Rear gear of 4.30 minimum recommended.

 

STAGE 3.5 - NATURALLY ASPIRATED 238/241 550/550 106/112 109

This is getting race only quickly as once you change the intake from the plastic PI to any of the good aftermarket ones you start looking at 7000-7500 minimum shift points with this cam on the TFS heads.  Rear gear of 4.56 minimum recommended.

 

STAGE 4    - NATURALLY ASPIRATED 241/243 550/540 106/112 109

This is getting race only quickly as once you change the intake from the plastic PI to any of the good aftermarket ones you start looking at 7250-7700 minimum shift points with this cam on the TFS heads.  Rear gear of 4.88 minimum recommended.

 

STAGE 4.5 - NATURALLY ASPIRATED 245/248 550/540 106/112 109

This is getting race only quickly as once you change the intake from the plastic PI to any of the good aftermarket ones you start looking at 7500-7900 minimum shift points with this cam on the TFS heads.  Rear gear of 4.88 minimum recommended.

 

STAGE 5    - NATURALLY ASPIRATED 250/253 540/540 106/112 109

This is getting race only quickly as once you change the intake from the plastic PI to any of the good aftermarket ones you start looking at 7700+ minimum shift points with this cam on the TFS heads.  Rear gear of 4.88 minimum recommended.

Ideal cam for Eaton, roots, P1SC, Procharger P600B, and Vortech S-trim with 6-8PSI.  Recommended nitrous shot 125HP.  Will work with stock TFS valve springs.  Best cam for a daily driver that you want maximum reliability and drivability.

Ideal cam for P1SC that want upper HP, NOVI1200, and Vortech S-trim with 10-12PSI.  Recommended nitrous shot 125HP.  Will work with stock TFS valve springs.

STAGE 1    - TURBO

This cam is designed specifically for 70MM and smaller single turbo systems, and will help with quicker spooling and lower the turbo lag.  It is highly recommended to replace the valve springs with this cam and any turbo system over 6PSI.  This is a good cam to use for a single turbo street car that you want the least amount of lag possible.

 

STAGE 2    - TURBO

This cam is designed specifically for 75MM and smaller single turbo systems, and will help with quicker spooling and lower the turbo lag.  It is highly recommended to replace the stock TFS valve springs with this cam and any turbo system over 6PSI if you the lower tension springs.

 

STAGE 2.5 - TURBO 227/223 525/500 110/120 115

This cam is designed specifically for 65MM - 80MM single turbo and dual smaller turbo systems that want higher HP and will trade some lower end lag.  It is highly recommended to replace the stock TFS valve springs with this cam and any turbo system over 6PSI if you the lower tension springs.

 

STAGE 3    - TURBO

This cam is designed specifically for 75MM and larger single turbo systems, and dual turbo systems.  This is a higher RPM cam and will have more low RPM turbo lag than our Stage 2 and Stage 2.5 TURBO cams.  This cam is intended for use with aftermarket intakes, and higher RPM builds.

We include our custom cam phaser lockouts with all 3V cams!
 
The stock cam phaser will allow up to 50 degrees of cam timing retard at cruise for a small gas mileage increase.  This lessens the available cam size you can run in the engine and is the weak spot when higher spring pressures are used.  While they are only recommended with our Stage 1 cams, they are required for all Stage 2 and higher 3V cams.
 
Stage 1 and 2 cams are designed to be used with the stock valve springs.
